PARIS ~ vol. une

ITS OFFICIAL....I'm in Paris and online too!

Okay, before I get into my experiences here in beautiful Paris I need to announce some good news.  Just prior to leaving for Paris my good friend and colleague Susan Wintrop (who I showed with at the Pumphouse Visual Art Centre in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 2005) just received news that we will be doing another show together at The Burlington Art Centre in the fall of 2009.  Curated by George Wale, the show is in a nice spacious gallery that will allow us to "stretch out" a bit.  I guess the Paris trip came at a good time!

Hello!  For those of you who were checking this page already the hotel internet connection was roasted so I had to wait until I landed at the studio to get the internet thing happening.  The flight over was a two pronged experience and I use the word prong purposely.  The night view of the Atlantic under the moonlight was something to see, however Air Canada had us packed in there so tightly I didnt have room to sneeze, I had the urge to prong the President of Air Canada in the eyeball with a fork when I got off the flight!!

Landed in Paris with no sleep and thoroughly jet lagged.  However, I was pretty excited so I hit the bricks to hook up with my friends Duncan, Melissa & their daughter Lily.  I figured time's a wastin' so lets get er done!  The first 3 days I covered on foot at least 35 km and saw and experienced many beautiful and inspiring things (pics are below the list):

~ the Rodin Museum.

~ a stunning exhibit of Anselm Kiefer's work at the Grand Palais which was an unbelievable space to see.  His work reflecting the wreckage of a century of war & destruction was installed in a MASSIVE 19th century exhibition palace.  The contrast between his work and how he worked with the space was incredible.

~ good wine (Bordeaux in particular) for less than 2.20 euros (thats about $4.50 cdn).  As a matter of fact I had a cheap Bordeaux that I paid 5.90 euro, (about $8.30 cdn) that pretty much killed every single bottle of Canadian wine I have ever drank....hands down.  I've always enjoyed Canadian wines but the "cheap" local fare here told me that we clearly have a longgggg way to go!

~ an excellent exhibit of Georges Baselitz's early works on paper.

~ a hilarious Annette Messager installation at the Pompidou that has to be seen to be believed (I'll post pics of that one later as the pics I got were poor and I will be revisiting the show).

~ the beauty of the Notre Dame cathedral.

I could go on but times a wasting and I have a date with the Seine, Notre Dame and the sunset and a couple of cold Heineken.  I shoot back to the studio and pack and head north to visit the Vimy Ridge Memorial, the Newfoundland Regiment Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel and the grave of my great uncle Albert who was killed in the Great War in the Battle of Hill 70.  Of course there will be pictures etc.  So look for an update Monday evening folks.  In the meantime, here are some pictures as promised!

Close up of one of the figures of Rodin's Burghers of Calais.  Quite the story behind these fellows, I advise you to make a quick visit to wikipedia if you do not know the story!!!!

These are my good friends Duncan & Melissa and their Lily the live-wire daughter!  We had the pleasure of sharing a bottle of Bordeaux and watching the sunset over the Seine.  The pictures above this one were taking at this little "party".

Thats all for now folks!!!
