NEWS......As of NOW.... October 23.... 8:37 pm.
A little local recognition As most of you might remember, last spring I had a large work accepted into the St. Catharines Juried Exhibition which was entitled "Distracted by abstrction". You might also recollect that I had the good fortune of winning the first prize, which was a purchase award. My work is now part of the City of St.Catharines Public Art Collection. Last night this work was officially presented to City Council and the fine folks at the Standard (our local newspaper for those of you not living in the area) published a small piece on the event which you can view by clicking HERE. I'd like to thank the folks on the City of St. Catharines Public Art Advisory Committee who were part of this process: Lesley Bell, St. Catharines Councilor Mark Elliott, Stephen Remus, Kim Shipp, Brent Smith, Peter Vietgen and Michael Zuberec.
New work My summer studio run was an extremely productive period yielding a number of interesting new directions for me. If you'd like to view a selection of some of these pieces please visit the Fall '08 Drawings link in the link bar.
Beaver-tails in Paris........ again!
This trip was an excellent combination of work and pleasure (mostly pleasure). The work part was lending my assistance to a colleague of mine at Brock University (Duncan MacDonald). The project was a collaborative piece with French artist Emmanuelle Raynaut. Part of this year's Nuit Blanche in Paris, the work which is titled L'Intrus (The Intruder) was staged at the Bibliotheque Forney located in a 15th century Palace on the Seine called the Hotel de Sens. An installation/sculptural/video/performance of impressive scale, you can check out a few photos on the Paris 2008 link in the link bar to your left. Other installations I enjoyed the night of Nuit Blanche were a wonderful Christian Boltanski, Frank Krawczyk & Jean Kalman performance and a video installation by Jeremy Blake at the Eglise St. Paul-St. Louis. Of course there were plenty of amazing sights, tastes, smells and sounds to be experienced on this trip. My better and smaller half Lisa attended a workshop at the famed culinary school the Cordon Bleu, and I visited an amazing contemporary art centre called Le Maison Rouge which featured an amazing installation work by Christian Boltanski and an absolutely mesmerizing performance/installation by Marie Cool & Fabio Balducci. Top some amazing contemporary art off with visits to the Orangerie, the Musee D'Orsay and the sleeper destination of them all....the Hotel Cluny Museum of the Middle Ages. Yes, a museum of the middle ages might seem....well.... a tad on the pedantic side but it was a stunning destination.
Upcoming exhibition Work for my next exhibition at the Burlington Arts Centre is moving along nicely. I've got a significant body of drawings completed and will be working feverishly over the coming year in order to have everything buttoned down this spring. The show, tentatively titled Surfacing will feature the ceramic work of Susan Wintrop and of course myself. I am also working through some small sculptural concepts that might make it into the show.
