The grind never ends and as a result I have two fresh crops of work on the go.
One a body of drawings and the other a body of found object works
on paper. The drawings are oilstick works on black surfaces, some on paper some
on panel treated with a black ground. Below is an example of one of
the works on paper. Click on the 2010 Drawings link in the left link bar to view
the new drawings, the found object works will also be posted there shortly
so check back again soon.

>Articles published.

There have been three pieces published on my work since September 2009. The first an essay by Curator Elaine Hujer that accompanied the Surfacing exhibit, and the second and third being two articles written by Michael Dirisio for the Brock Press. The first article for the Brock Press was on the Recent Drawings show at Pan Cafe in St. Catharines, and the second examined the work in the Common Knowledge show at Brock University. These articles are posted in the reviews section of the site. Michael Dirisio is a 4th Honours student in the Brock Visual Arts Department whose work will be featured this spring in the 406 Honours Graduating Exhibition.

The good folks at Pan Cafe at 120 St. Paul Street in St. Catharines have extended my Recent Drawings exhibition by one week. So if you have not stopped by for a coffee, lunch/brunch and some new drawings on wood panel you now have until January 7th to do so.

>Common Knowledge
January 5 - 29, 2010

Reception: Thursday January 14, 6 to 8 pm

Sean O'Sullivan Theatre Lobby, Brock University
500 Glenridge St., St Catharines

This exhibition features a 27 panel relief sculpture installation work, and a couple of framed drawings on paper. The focus has been on the use of objects and surfaces for this run of work. The relief installation features a "cluster" of intimate scaled works utilizing a few panels executed over the last two years, with the rest being from my November to December studio blitz. It also features a subtle continuance of my interest in kinetic ideas which some of you may remember from my site-specific case installation PERDU ET TROUVÉ which took place late winter 2009 in the James A. Gibson Library at Brock University. Below is one close up of one of the panels, plus a couple of studio shots showing the chaos in which this work was created! I've also included below the artist statement for the exhibition:

Creating one’s own universe.…is to pierce the veil, the membrane that maps out the spaces between us. These lines that draw out the topographical map of the soul, those surfaces that separate now from our dreams…my dream of the past, our faith in the future. Bits and pieces of a world penetrate the distance between then and now forming a conduit through which we can view ourselves. An erstwhile spyglass that allows us to peer into the silence that teems with reflections flashing here and there like falling stars in the night. These fragments of now, once were then. The act of creation….is an act that creates a small universe. This esoteric and beautifully selfish act is also selfless in its essence. At times deadly serious, yet often pure play? Like an otter, perhaps at times there is no other purpose then the pure joy of sliding down the mud into the waters below. Our furry bellies slick with the soil which will eventually be the bed we will nestle into and dream ourselves into new creatures, substances…another small universe.

Repose. 2008
Found objects, pigemented beeswax, plaster on wood panel.

I sometimes wonder how I manage to work out of such a cramped, claustrophobic space. But as they say necessity is the mother of invention. You can just barely make out my studio assistant...Tommy the Cat curled up on his throne beside my studio jeans on the chair to the left.

Not everything on the wall is part of the installation, a few of the objects on the upper and lower end are simply studio souvenirs/talismans that keep me company. There are also a few panels missing.

>Big thanks!

It seems like it was only yesterday that Susan and I found out we were to do a show at the Burlington Art Centre, two and a half years later it is all over. Many thanks to George and the fine staff at the BAC for the fantastic install of this exhibition and to Elaine Hujer for the wonderful essay that accompanies this exhibit in the catalogue! Please check back soon for a selection of installation shots.

>Current new works posted

I've just posted a series of photos of my current works.  Click on the 2009 Drawings link in the link bar to your left to see the latest drawings that will form the back-bone of my upcoming exhibition at the Burlington Art Centre with Susan Wintrop titled "Surfacing".  Also, check back shortly for some video and installation shots of my latest show at Brock University titled "PERDU ET TROUVÉ".

>Another Local Yokel Exhibition

I
'm pleased to announce that my work was selected for exhibit in the 5th annual City of St. Catharines Annual Juried Exhibition.  This years show was titled Escarpment: On the edge and as the title indicates called for work that examined and/or addressed our local environment with a focus on how the "Niagara escarpment has defined our geography, history, economy, and culture. Art work in this exhibition will explore the many facets of the escarpment’s presence in the lives of people in the St. Catharines area throughout history".  The exhibit runs from April 22 to July 24 in the main foyer of St. Catharines City Hall.  Some of you might remember that my work accepted into last years show won best in show and was taken into the City of St. Catharines Permanent Art Collection (egoegoego).

As the work I entered last year was a drawing I felt I'd submit something different this year.  The work entitled "Found" is one of my plaster works on panel with a found object.  Click on the photo below for a detail view of this work.

I'd like to acknowledge the fine work of Art Foundry Master Bill Jurgenson for the bronze cast component in this work.  Bill does amazing work for real sculptors like Reinhard Reitzenstein, so I was very fortunate that he was kind enough to find the time to do this work for me!

PERDU ET TROUVÉ
James A. Gibson Library

Brock University

March 23 > April 19
St. Catharines

Installation shots and video of this exhibit have just been posted.  Click on Perdu et trouvé in the link bar to your left to view these resources.  Included with these is a brief artist statement about the work.

Many thanks to Brian Durocher for his technical work on the electronic aspects of this work and Art Foundry Master Bill Jurgenson for the amazing work in casting the bronze components.

After a very productive year with a lot of drawings and relief sculptures coming out of the studio I found the urge to step outside of my comfort zone a few months ago.  As I have been working with found objects and a variety of "odd" materials I thought I'd challenge myself to create a small group of works using only objects, some materials I have not worked with and some "technology".  The result is a small two-piece site-specific exhibit located in two display cases in the James A. Gibson Library at Brock University.   These cases are located on the first floor directly across from the Help Desk in the Matheson Learning Commons.

The exhibit entitled Perdu et Trouvé contains work that is a response to the Library environment, the library as a vessel of knowledge.  Through the juxtaposition of found, manipulated and manufactured objects these works explore the notion of knowledge as a mutable thing, something very organic.  Below are a few details of these works in progress.  Once these two installations are finished I will be posting full installation photos on a dedicated page with a set of detail photos.

>Another Provincial Exhibition

I 'm pleased to announce that my work was selected for exhibit in Convergence 2009: 46th Annual Tom Thomson Art Gallery Juried Exhibition.  The exhibit runs from January 23 to March 1, 2009 in Owen sound, Ontario.  The work featured is titled Adrift and can be viewed in the Fall '08 Drawings page.  Those of you familiar with my exhibit history might remember that the last time I was included in this exhibition way back in 1992 I won best in show (egoegoego).

>Work taken into another collection

I've just received news that The Grimsby Public Art Gallery has taken four of my works into their permanent collection.  The four works pictured below, two relief sculptures and two drawings are now part of their collection.  The drawings date to a series of works executed in the summer of 2005, and the sculptures were date to 2000 & 2001.  Click on any of the thumbnail pics below to see full size and detailed versions of these works.

>A little local recognition

As most of you might remember, last spring I had a large work accepted into the St. Catharines Juried Exhibition which was entitled "Distracted by abstraction".  You might also recollect that I had the good fortune of winning the first prize, which was a purchase award.  My work is now part of the City of St.Catharines Public Art Collection.  Last night this work was officially presented to City Council and the fine folks at the Standard (our local newspaper for those of you not living in the area) published a small piece on the event which you can view by clicking HERE.

I'd like to thank the folks on the City of St. Catharines Public Art Advisory Committee who were part of this process:  Lesley Bell, St. Catharines Councilor Mark Elliott, Stephen Remus, Kim Shipp, Brent Smith, Peter Vietgen and Michael Zuberec.
